Jane is an experienced, versatile commercial, IP, tech and data protection lawyer who advises on businesses in all sector but has focussed on working with businesses, large and small, in the creative, media and entertainment sector. She has extensive experience in advising on, negotiating and concluding a wide variety of contracts for the creation and exploitation of intellectual property and commercial contracts of all descriptions, including the production and distribution of audio-visual content on all platforms, music, e-commerce, newspaper, book and magazine publishing, printing and distribution and agreements relating to advertising, marketing, sponsorship, events, tech and outsourcing.
Jane also provides advice and training on data protection and privacy issues.
After pupillage at the Chancery Bar and a spell as an assistant solicitor at Slaughter and May, Jane joined Phonographic Performance Limited (PPL) as its sole lawyer and company secretary before joining Sony Music’s legal and business affairs team. She was a legal and business affairs consultant for many years, before going in-house at Reach plc (formerly Trinity Mirror plc), another of her clients, where she set up and led the Commercial Legal Department, with responsibility for all commercial and contractual legal matters across its businesses.
Jane has worked with news publishers and producers, including ITN, Associated Newspapers, News UK, Telegraph Media Group and The Racing Post and with production companies on commissions from ITV, the BBC, Channel 5, Netflix and other national and international broadcasters and streaming companies. She has also worked with podcast producers, record companies (Sony Music, EMI Music Europe), music publishers, book publishers, artists, composers, computer games designers, cloud service and e-commerce providers.
Jane has also worked on public policy issues, via media industry bodies, including online safety, age-appropriate design, ad tech, the digital markets unit and the regulation of AI.
At Reach, Jane introduced processes to standardise contracts and improve contracting and governance procedures for which she gained recognition with a European Woman of Legal Tech Award. She was also responsible for creating and refreshing template agreements, business terms and “playbooks” for many aspects of the business to enable digital evolution and solution automation.
Jane’s in-house experience means she can deliver cost-effective and pertinent strategic legal and business advice, including on complex and challenging deals and she understands how to effectively and proportionately manage risk and control compliance whilst navigating legal, compliance and commercial obstacles.
