Work Experience

At Ignition Law, we are keen to nurture and support the next generation of lawyers and provide them with the experience and insights they need to take the next step in their legal career.

We welcome around four aspiring lawyers each Summer to our office in Farringdon (London) for 3 to 5 days of work experience. Persons not based in London can participate in the work experience programme remotely.

We pay the National Minimum/Living Wage to candidates who successfully complete the work experience programme.

About the Work Experience Programme

We anticipate that the work experience programmes will take place in-person in our office in Farringdon (London) or a hybrid of in-person and remote work experience. Successful candidates will work through a carefully designed programme, providing opportunity and exposure to junior and senior lawyers, clients and entrepreneurs.

You will have the opportunity to test your drafting and research skills on various legal tasks, attend know how training, assist our legal team on live client matters and undertake other tasks that our paralegals and junior lawyers routinely carry out as part of their ordinary work.

The scheme is primarily aimed at university students or recent graduates (law or non-law), but we also welcome applications from sixth form students who can demonstrate an interest in law.

As a firm with a majority female Senior Leadership Team and midway through becoming a B-Corp, we are committed to promoting diversity in the legal profession and welcome applications for work experience from persons of all backgrounds who are driven, have strong academics and an interest in the start-up space and legal profession.

We particularly encourage applications from those from state schools or with non-traditional or less advantaged backgrounds and will give special consideration to applications from candidates with such backgrounds and to BAME candidates.

We are especially interested in candidates with a real drive and determination to succeed in the profession, to nurture and support your self-starter attitude and help you flourish.

Interested candidates should download and send the completed application form and the equality form to workexperienceapply@ignition.law. We will only accept applications for work experience via these methods.

Please note the following application windows and deadlines:

• Summer 2023 (scheme dates flexible between June and September) – please apply between 1 February and 31 March 2023
• Summer 2024 (scheme dates flexible between June and September) – please apply between 1 February and 31 March 2024

We will review all applications received at the end of each application window and will aim to reply to successful candidates within six weeks of the application window closing.

Unfortunately, as we are a small team we can only offer a small number of places each year. We therefore feel it is fair to offer those places to individuals who are either recent graduates, currently at university or in sixth form. Priority is generally given to students who will have completed (at the time of the work experience) at least one year of a university degree as we feel they will get the most out of the placement.

We receive a lot of applications which is why we have set application windows. If you have missed the deadline, please consider applying for the next scheme when that application window opens.

Due to capacity within the team, we are unable to offer longer work experience. We occasionally recruit for paralegal positions so please keep an eye out for posts on our socials or on our website if this interests you.

Yes, we are committed to widening access to the profession and therefore pay National Minimum/Living Wage to candidates who successfully complete the work experience programme. You will need to cover your own transport and food costs during the week.

We will aim to respond to let you know if you have been successful or not within six weeks of the application window closing.

Yes, of course! We ran the work experience programme 100% remotely during lockdown and are happy to accommodate this again. Naturally, if you can make it into our office in London for a day or two, we’d be delighted to welcome you.

No, the work experience programme is entirely separate to the recruitment process for paralegals and trainees. Please check our website or our socials for recruitment. We hope that the programme will assist you with your applications for a training contract elsewhere or the next step in your legal career.

The work experience programme is designed to give you a brief insight into a career in law, have the opportunity to contribute to live client matters and undertake some of the tasks that our paralegals routinely do. We have in the past hired paralegals that have participated in the work experience programme, but this is not the purpose of the scheme and there is no guarantee of a job at the end of it.

We ran a remote work experience programme during lockdown in 2020 and 2021 and we are able to structure the programme this way again, if needed. To the extent that all or part of the programme is remote, it will be as close to an in-person work experience scheme as we can provide given remote working arrangements across the team.

Please email us at workexperienceapply@ignition.law and we will see if we can help.
